Why has the CM sought permission from L-G to try and amend the way he handled the Emergency situation in Delhi? Why has the Congress party allied itself with the AAP? All this and more is what the AAP government is dealing with at the moment.
The reason that the L-G has asked for permission to try and amend the way the Delhi government managed the crisis is because he is aware that there will be widespread criticism not only from the opposition parties but from the citizens of Delhi as well. Many citizens of Delhi have joined the anti-PM party in large numbers. The current government has been delivering sops to various minorities but the AAP government has delivered nothing substantial. Even the Congress party is trying to distance itself from the crisis. Even though Rahul Gandhi visited Delhi twice in recent times it has been unable to make the citizens of Delhi understand the extent of the fiscal irresponsibility that the Delhi government has been exhibiting.
The idea of appeasement was used by several earlier governments as a tool to garner support of the masses behind their rule. Appeasement is where the rulers provide you soft space so that you can indulge in anti-national activities without any serious repercussions. The freedom of expression that is provided through appeasement is one of the main reasons that make the democracy fragile. When you give people what they want at the cost of your nation’s unity then you are said to be giving appeasement.
When the Congress ruled the country, it indulged in appeasement and helped Pakistan with nuclear weapons development. Similarly, the Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP has also indulged in this dangerous trend of appeasement. They have not condemned the Emergency or the way the Indian citizen was suppressed during the Emergency. The RSS has also not condemned the manner in which the then Planning and Growth Division chief Smiti was sidelined and removed. All this indicates that the RSS has lost all sight of its nationalistic objectives and has adopted a totally secular approach. In fact it is the RSS that is responsible for the present crisis in the country.
The Emergency was planned by the former Planning and Growth Division headed by Smiti. However, the new dispensation that came into being later was more planned and executed by the present government under the direction of the current cabinet. There was appeasement of corruption, lack of transparency in public life, media concentration on crony capitalism and adventurism. All these changed the course of government politics and paved the way for Bharatiya Janata to come to power.
However, this does not mean that the Emergency was a success and appeasement of the Emergency government should be adopted as the party platform for future politics. Rather we should understand that the appeasement policy of the previous governments in India was not confined to one sector but encompassed all sectors including the economy, society, environment, and social sectors. We should understand that appeasement did not bring about any positive changes in the country’s politics and instead worsened the situation.
